Waste criminals face quick penalty
Under new powers invested in the Environment Agency,
firms found carrying waste illegally could be hit with a
£300 on the spot fine.
Officials can now issue fixed penalty notices to
companies that have not registered.
D-Day for non-hazardous landfill waste
Waste producers need to mark the date of 30 October
2007 on their calendar. Non-hazardous waste must be
treated before it can be sent to landfill and liquid nonhazardous
waste will be banned completely. These stem
from the Landfill Directive, which aims to reduce
reliance on landfill as a waste management option and
minimise the environmental impact of landfill sites. Now
is good time for waste producers to review how they do
this, including whether it needs to be produced at all –
and whether what they do produce needs to be sent to
landfill.
Guidance, briefing notes and fact sheets to help
businesses know what they are doing, are available from
the Environment Agency via their website at:
www.environment-agency.gov.uk

A waste management company and its MD have been
fined more than £62,000, after pleading guilty to keeping
and transferring potentially harmful skip waste without a
licence, at Newbury Magistrates Court
