Hothersall Lecture, Christmas Lecture,
Luncheon, Presidential Address, Annual General
Meeting and Presentation of Awards
Friday 30 November commencing at 11.00 am
(coffee from 10.30) at the Birmingham Medical Institute, 36
Harborne Road, Edgbaston, Birmingham B36 3AF
Hothersall Memorial Lecture – Electrodeposition on
(photo)electrochemically prepared nanostructures on silicon by Hans Lewerenz
(Hahn-Meitner Instit)
After introducing the (photo)electrochemistry of silicon, nanostructures prepared on single crystalline
silicon electrodes by self-organised (photo)electrochemical processes will be presented. These structures
encompass mesa-type features formed in the divalent dissolution regime, nanopore fields in silicon oxide
present during current oscillations in fluoride containing electrolytes, step-bunched surfaces and fractal
photocorrosion patterns. Metal electrodeposition into the oxide nanopores and onto step bunched
surfaces will be described, together with analyses of chemical, structural and electronic behaviour of the
silicon-metal composites using scanning techniques
Invitation Lecture – Metal Finishing – enhanced performance achieved
through plasma processing by Denis Dowling (University College Dublin)
This presentation will provide an overview of how the use of plasma treatments can enhance the
performance of metal surfaces, including reduction in friction, increased wear resistance, decorative
appearance and biocompatibility. The presentation will include an overview of plasma processing
techniques, and provide examples of how deposited nano and micron thick coatings have found
applications in areas of tooling, polymer processing equipment, medical devices and on components
requiring a decorative finish. To achieve enhanced performance over a diverse range of applications the
individual coatings have to be tailored to meet the specific end user requirements and examples of how
this can be achieved will be provided.
Traditional Christmas Lunch
Presidential Address – Innovation Moves Forward (towards 2025 or we die)
by Samuel Briggs JP
The Institute of Metal Finishing is celebrating 82 years of existence this year. But what will the next two
decades bring?
Thought provoking questions, comments and ideas will be part of this presentation.

Health, Safety and Environment
Free training offered by European
Hazardous Waste Project
As the Government proposes new targets for tackling
UK waste as a whole, an EU-Life funded project is to
provide small businesses with free training on hazardous
waste reduction, as part of its commitment to helping
industry cut hazardous waste.
Led by the Environment Agency, HAZRED is a
partnership project between SEPA, IEPA, WAG,
Envirowise, Groundwork, SafetyKleen, and the Waste
Recycling Group.
The project, which has been running for over two years,
has worked closely with a number of UK companies
across six key industry sectors to identify opportunities
to minimise hazardous waste output – and save them
money as a result. Now, the project has announced that
it will share best practice advice across the UK and
Europe, starting with a training workshop open to any
small company operating in one of six sectors:
Construction, Motor Vehicles, Machinery Manufacture,
Speciality Chemicals, Photographic & Print and Metal
Finishing. Participants will benefit from sector-specific
advice and guidance, delivered by industry specialists, in
interactive sessions. There will also be an opportunity
for businesses to learn about staff engagement and
awareness – an imperative part of an effective
programme of waste management.
One company in the Metal Finishing sector has already
benefited from the free on-site consultancy offered by
HAZRED and has been able to reduce and even
eliminate the use of certain hazardous chemicals in
several processes, which in turn, has minimised their
waste disposal costs.
The HAZRED training workshop will take place at
Aston Villa Football Club in Birmingham on 17 October.
To find out more or to register interest in attending,
please contact Anna Pizzi on 07876 391 374 or email
hazred@trimediahc.com. For further information about
HAZRED, and to download a copy of the specially
developed hazardous waste reduction plans for the six
priority sectors, visit www.hazred.org.uk.
REACH
A huge shake-up in the way chemicals are regulated is
impacting on almost UK business sectors. REACH
chemical legislation came into force on 1 June 2007, and
if you think it won’t affect you, think again. REACH is
a new set of EU regulations, which stands for
Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and
Restriction of Chemicals. It means that a wide range
of businesses will have new legal obligations. Most
businesses use some form of chemicals.
HSE is playing a key role by providing the UK
Competent Authority role as well as its enforcement.
There is a detailed information website and its scope:

HSE also has experts to answer your question which you
can E-mail at: newsletter@hse.gsi.gov.uk
European Directive on labelling and
packaging of substances and mixtures
The European Commission has adopted the ‘Proposal
for a Regulation of the European Parliament and of the
Council on classification, labelling and packages of
substances and mixtures, and amending Directive
67/548/EEC and Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006/
(COM(2007 355 final). The proposed act aligns the EU
system of classification, labelling and packaging
substances and mixtures to the United Nations Globally
Harmonised System (GHS). It is expected to facilitate
global trade and harmonised communication of hazard
information of chemicals and to promote regulatory
efficiency. It will complement the new REACH
Regulation. The proposed Regulation will be discussed
by the European and the Council under the co-decision
procedure. To find out more go to:

IMF
UK Corrosion 2007– Managing Corrosion
for Sustainability
The IMF was invited to participate in this conference
held at Sheffield Hallam University. The IMF supplied
ten presentations including two keynote addresses. The
conference room was unusual in that it was very wide
but shallow in length, but with the aid of two
simultaneous power point projectors all was well. The
IMF presentations were well received prompting several
questions. Attendance, in general, varied between 20 to
40 persons.
Detail of the presentations will be included in future
issues of the Transactions of the Institute of Metal
Finishing journal
